The iButton (also known as the Dallas
Key) is a mechanical packaging standard that
places a 1-Wire component inside a small
stainless steel "button" similar to a
disk-shaped battery. iButtons
are connected to 1-Wire bus systems by means of
sockets with contacts which touch the "lid" and
"base" of the canister. The connection can be
fleeting, comparable to a thumb being scanned by
a fingerprint reader. iButtons
are used within vehicles to uniquely identify
the driver and allow the vehicle to start.
Alternatively, the connection can be
semi-permanent with a different socket type; the
iButton clips into it, but is easily removed.
Touch memory technology is
used primarily in applications relating to
physical security, access control, vehicle
protection, and fleet management. The MBL
Technologies probe accepts the standard
iButton Data is transferred to and from
the iButton by touching its
surface onto the MBL Technologies probe.
A weatherproof housing is
available for where the touch reader has to be
mounted outside and exposed to rain.

Where extended contact is needed between an
iButton and probe, the magnetic keyfob
is ideal. Used with our magnetic probe, the
ibutton is retained in contact
with the probe by a metallic ring which is
firmly attracted to the magnets in the probe.
Examples of use would be in vehicle enabling
systems, EPOS systems and failsafe access.
